coba & others - heal up! monsoon
by Andreas Stuhlmann

"Japanese Astor Piazzolla," accordion player Coba has gathered together a number of Japanese musicians and composers for this project, and even if the result is a matter of taste and everything other than hip, it’s a success in terms of its spiritual effect. The CD is not a collection of new age or "healing" music, and — apart from the title’s suggestion — doesn’t even claim to have healing powers. It’s more like a musical herbal potion that sets the physical and psychological conditions that are necessary for successful medical treatment. Middle age-style music using lutes and flutes, Mongolian original chant, acoustic guitar pieces, and, of course, Coba himself in two tango-flavored tracks, make up a collection that doesn’t shout "like me!" but carefully says, "hey, look, there’s such a huge power embodied in music." Organic groove without the groovy element; music not for dancing, but for feeling and thinking.
