putting the morr back into morrissey
a morr music compilation

by Andreas Stuhlmann
How this release was planned (as a single) and realised (as a
2-Cd set) is a story in itself that is almost as entertaining
as the music on the 2 CDs that introduce the beautiful world of
Berlin-based label Morr Music. Key figures in this game of I-remix-yours-and-you-cover-mine
are Markus Acher from the German band The Notwist, label owner
Thomas Morr, and the British electro unit Isan. Not only the term
Morr-issey is given a new definition on Morrs sonic sketch
board, but also the whole cosmos of electronic non-dance music.
In this genre quality tends to be judged by degrees of innovation,
technology/techniques, unique combinations of musical styles,
groove, etc. What is often ignored (and erased from the creative
side of most modern musicians brains) is that sweet little thing
called melody. Not that the 140 minutes of music on Putting
the Morr
dont offer innovation and a variety of styles, but
in addition to showcasing the activities of an amazingly creative
network of artists, this album announces the introduction of melody
into experimental electronic music. What makes Morr Music unique
is the fact that it gathers musicians that come from different
corners of the music world pop, jazz, ambient, avant-garde,
etc. and are all tied (not tickled) together by musical interest
and respect for each other, without necessarily hitting the same
keys. This results in the extremely positive facts that monotony
is out of question and our friend melody occupies centre stage
in remixes, remakes, and original compositions by artists such
as The Notwist, Tied & Tickled Trio, Arovane, Isan, Kandis, Wechsel
Garland, Phonem, and many more. Some of these names have just
appeared in the Japanese press, in magazines such as After Hours
and Fader. Morr music, Morr life!
