Apti French movie posters and pastis advertisements comprise the wrapping
to something very hard to find beyond the borders of Franco proper:
good French food at reasonable prices. 2,800 yen buys a three
coarse dinner (1000 yen a lunch) of scrumptious bourgeois style
dishes and tasty desserts. There's the fruits de mer quiche, beef
in red wine sauce, and lamb cotelette-with touches like salmon
tartare and a smidge of caviar on the side. Mouth-popping good.

Bar Bee Around the corner from Kinsmen is the latest addition to Nichome's
dives. Open since April, Bar Bee's mirrored walls and all-black
decor create the illusion of space so necessary in the confines
of most of these tiny bars. Manager Shara, who can speak some
English, says that Bar Bee attracts a 50/50 mix of men and women.
Shara chooses R&B or latin tunes for her customers, and says she
wants to offer a laid-back atmosphere. With her relaxed, surfer-gal
image, that doesn't seem like such a hard task. She says that
couples and friends buzz to Bar Bee to hang out, chat, and just
bee. Bar Bee accommodates about 15 (seated) plus some space for
standing. The cover charge is 400 yen and includes a snack. Drinks
start from 800 yen. Shinjuku 2-18-10 2F, 8 pm-4 am, closed Tues.

Bellini Trattoria We know. Deja vu. But wait. Unlike its Roppongi older brother,
this trattoria member of the Bellini restaurant family is a little
more private, a little more sophisticated, and a little smaller.
Here you can peruse the Antipasto menu in an intimate setting,
summon the waiter to order a crispy house Caesar salad followed
by a generous portion of the Bengasine alle genovese (thick noodles
in a homemade basil sauce) or the Involtini maiale con asparagi
(tender pork wrapped around asparagus in a mustard sauce). Impress
your date with your Berlitz-calibre mastery of Italian, but even
if you speak this particular romance language, a few meals at
the more "upscale Bellini" will have you speaking the lingo in
no time. Open: 11:30am-11pm daily. Lunch last order at 3pm, dinner
