Need to get out of the neon urban sprawl of Shibuya? Want to jump into a
refreshing oasis of fresh fruit and vegetables? Well, you could try diving
straight into a can of Dole peaches. But if you're not quite small enough,
the Dole Fruit Cafe is the next best thing.
It's a relaxing Southern European colonial-style cafe, designed with
terra cotta and colors in earthy and, inevitably, fruity tones. The outside
terrace is even surrounded by pine trees to make the tropical oasis theme
complete.
Start with one of the twelve fresh juices - the most popular is orange
(Yen 600), but there's also lychee, mango, guava and pineapple, and a host
of other Dole picks. Or, if you need a quicker cool-down, there are fruity
yogurt shakes (Yen 700 and up) and 21 fruit cocktails incorporating fruit
drinks with fruit liqueurs.
Now you're ready for some food. And what sort of unique comestibles are
"Doled out" here? Well, believe it or not, they've got two different
kinds of fruit pizzas here - try one before you pass judgement; you won't
be sorry. The mango and tomato, (a delicate Italian-style crust graced with
mango bits, mozzarella and tomato sauce is a bargain at Yen 950 and the
pineapple and chorizo pizza in a basil and parsley sauce (Yen 900) will
further please the taste buds. There are also various sandwiches: avocado
and ham, tuna, chicken with Dijon mustard, a vegetable sandwich, and, of
course, a fruit sandwich.
"Try the Caesar salad," urges restaurant producer Hiromi Ohtaki,
"because most Caesar salads in Japan don't use Romaine lettuce which
we import from California and Utah." She also recommends the the dessert
pizza, "topped with custard cream...and wild fruit."
