When the first Moti opened in Akasaka back in 1978, it filled a niche
and satisfied cravings for Indian cuisine. After a short incubation time
of less than four years, the Roppongi branch opened in 1982. Today, the
Tokyoite can choose from no less than six Motis in and around the Big Mikan.
After more than 20 years of serving those yearning for true Indian spice,
Moti has become something of an institution. These days the name is even
being used by pollsters to verify the consciousness level and the length
of stay of metropolitan residents. If you know the name, you are a Tokyoite.
If you have dined at one of their restaurants, you are a sophisticated Tokyoite.
And if you go out of your way to obtain this maharadjan feeling say,
once or twice a week you have achieved connoisseur status, with enough
savoir-vivre to enjoy the good things in life.
In short, the six Motis are six of those places that thrive on repeat business.
Eat there once and return there forever. It must be the red carpets, the
elephant-sized gold vases, the crystal-glass partitions, the genuine Indian
folk paintings, the food, the friendly service. Speaking of red carpets,
those in the Roppongi branch have recently been renewed and give one the
sensation of walking on clouds.
Never running out of innovative ideas to serve the community, selected Motis
are now offering a delivery service (3479-1955), from 5pm to 9:30pm. If
you are among the lucky ones who work or live close to a Moti in Akasaka
or Roppongi, you now can enjoy your curry and nan in the comfort of your
own office or home. Looking for a caterer for that next party, on December
31 perhaps? Make your reservations now. Of course Moti also offers party
space at their restaurants.
One note to casual diners and to walk-in customers: be prepared to bump
into celebrities and famous sports people, especially at the two Akasaka
locations, due to their close proximity to TBS and to half a dozen 5-star
hotels. Enjoy the real taste of Indian cuisine.
