Rice Terrace

No time to fly to Thailand? Fly instead to this cozy shop on a quiet sidestreet with a tiered exterior designed to resemble an actual Thai rice terrace.

Step inside and savor the exotic elegance - sculptures and photographs, high ceilings and a bar, and a second floor special room perfect for parties of 20 or less. And each dish is another work of art to behold with expertly carved fruits and vegetables accompanying the cuisine. Direct your complements to chef Carinpon Ratovan; his wife does the carving.

We recommend the Tom Kar Gai soup (chicken with coconut milk, chili, lemon grass, coriander and other spices). Then move on to the Gai How Baytoey (five pieces of deep fried chicken wrapped in a memorably aromatic Pandumus leaf). It comes with a black soy and sesame dipping sauce. Then the Chu Chi Goong tiger prawns in a moderately spicy coconut sauce of red curry and garlic will delight the palate, while the accompanying cut carrot flower creates the feeling that these prawns were born for your plate. Finish with a light dessert of Saku Thua Dam (tapioca and red beans in coconut milk) and your vacation is complete.

There are even lunch sets starting at Yen1,000 and dinner courses beginning at Yen 3,800. Some meals can go double this, but think of all the cash you're saving on airfare and hotels.
