Japanese politics". But those looking for a introduction to the complex
world of Japanese politics will find the site useful as well. Japan
Politics Central features a wealth of links to media organs, government
agencies, political parties and research institutions which form the
backbone of policy-making in Japan. A bibliography categorized by issue
area points to both electronic and print resources. At the time of this
review, Japan Politics Central has plans to expand its offerings to
include original "chapters" on various aspects of Japanese
government and politics.

The Management and Coordination Agency's Statistics Bureau
and Statistics Center are responsible for carrying out the nation's
major census and statistics services. At the site, you can find
extensive, up-to-date general economic, population, labor and wage
data in both English and Japanese. Many of the statistical series are
available in Microsoft Excel format for spreadsheet manipulation.


Institute of Social Science –

The Institute of Social Science (ISS) founded in 1946 at the
prestigeous University of Tokyo is one of Japan's leading centers of
research in political science, demography, history and sociology.
ISS publishes the quarterly newsletter Social Science Japan, the SSJ
Journal and an occasional series of discussion papers. In addition, ISS
maintains the SSJ-FORUM email group, an academic moderated list for
the social sciences related to Japan.


National Clearing House for US-Japan Studies

An adjunct-ERIC Clearinghouse, the National Clearinghouse for
U.S.-Japan Studies specializes in providing educational information
about Japan. The audience is K-12 students, teachers, specialists
and curriculum developers. The site features an innovative, easy-to-use
lesson plan database which utilizes a search engine divided by
grade, subject and keyword.


The Faculty of Asian Studies

ANU has long been a center of Asian studies resources on the
world-wide-web. This new front end to the variety of activities and
research occuring in the oft-neglected, but extremely important
corner of the Pacific Rim features access to a number of high-quality
resources including the Asian Studies WWW Virtual Library.


Asian Educational Media Service

The Asian Educational Media Service (AEMS) is a program of the
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign's Center for East Asian and
Pacific Studies. It helps educators at all levels locate audio-visual
resources on Asia and offers advice about which resources may best
suit their needs. The Web site includes a searchable database of films
and videos, CD-ROMs and videodiscs, and audio cassettes and slides for
teaching and learning about the countries and cultures of Asia.
Also includes reviews, annotated listings of K-12 resources, and links
to major Asian studies sites.
