Ace (formerly Zinc)

So much for those "Gay Only" joints.

Finally, there's a fresh new club in Shinjuku's ni-chome where gay men, lesbians and their friends can gather for cocktails and chill out to some pretty cool music. If you haven't been there already, you got to check out Club Ace.

Guests at this groovy club can slip into a velvet sofa and a dry martini or stand up with the crowd and shake those tail feathers. Low neon tables, couch pillows, electric chandeliers, full body statues, and of course, the obligatory tiger skin make for a retro atmosphere that most anyone can enjoy. While English is never a problem, you may loose your tongue when you check out the sexy wait staff. I have my personal favorite.

Bar Manager Jonathan says the idea for the club was born in the haze of a week of parties in New York and Miami. He thought it would be great if Tokyo could offer a little more flavor of the American gay scene. Jonathan says the queer community needs a place where men and women can get together and have real dialogue. All too often, the Tokyo gay community is divided with gay bars here, lesbian bars there, and transvestite bars, well . . . here and there.

"Things seem to be coming together perfectly," says Jonathan. Ace now attracts a very international crowd and holds several parties each month, from the occasional Salaryman Night to the Go-Go Boy extravaganza.

It is not impossible to find love at Club Ace, but you may have better luck at the cruising park just across the street or down the road at GB or Dragon. I believe it's been said before that Ace is more about romance and not the casual pick-up.

Whether it is your first time to ni-chome or you are desperately seeking an alternative to the usual, give Ace a try; you won't be disappointed. You may want to call to find out what event is on. So, go get your best club drag together and get on down to Ace. Jonathan and the gang are waiting.

Open everyday, 8pm-4am. No cover, usually.
