A Dickensian Experience
Imagine a pub in Tokyo like the secretive and intricate manor on the
outskirts of town in Charles Dickens' novel Great Expectations.
Now go there.
What the Dickens in Ebisu is a wonderful labyrinth of a pub with distinct
levels, staircases and passageways leading off in different directions.
An abundant use of warm, deep-toned wood in the construction gives the place
a down-home, relaxed feeling quite unusual in the steel & glass mecca
of the trendy Shibuya/Ebisu area. Needless to say this well-conceived watering
hole is an extremely popular meeting place among foreign residents of Tokyo.
The main floor is centered around a stage with a bar off to the left, but
the stairwells rising to seating above provide the most comfy areas in the
bar to relax. Serving a variety of English and Irish beer/stout (like Bass
and Guinness), as well as offering delicious British-style pub food, What
the Dickens lives up to its Anglo name. It's easy to see why this pub has
been a favorite among the international community since its inception in
late 1995.
Not content to simply provide these agreeable victuals, What the Dickens
has specialized in putting on live entertainment. Everything from poetry
reading to grinding rock has graced the stage here but these days one is
most likely to see power pop, blues, folk or fusion performances. Whether
you want to relax in an intimate setting with a special person, meet friends
or listen to live music, What the Dickens provides a perfect venue.
Open from 5 pm till 2 am Tuesday to Saturday, but closes at midnight
on Sunday. Closed Monday.
