Guinness fans who long for a bit of calm while they quaff their pint will
be pleased to discover the Irish House's inviting, cozy interior. Just opened
in April, the Irish House in Shimbashi offers an easy-going atmosphere complete
with wood paneling and all the authentic bric-a-brac you'd expect to find
in the real McCoy. Says genial manager Hiroshi Kawamoto in his faint Shikoku
inflection, "Customers can feel like they're in a real Irish pub."
The Irish House's padded benches and stained glass windows certainly provide
an genuine enough milieu to down your pint ofdraught Guinness or Kilkenny
(Yen 900). From October, Hiroshi plans to organize live music with the Australian
folk-Celt theme Bad Fling (who'll impress with their highland pipes and
cittern, among other exotic instruments). Serving lunch from 11.30 am until
2 pm, the Irish House's Yen 850 lunch set (soup and salad included) is a
bargain. Their home-made lamb stew is a carnivore's delight, featuring succulent
chunks of pink meat and potatoes. Top it off with a pint of Guinness, and
you could close your eyes and imagine the 40 shades of green undulating
gently outside the window (instead of Shimbashi Station). The Irish House
serves up the brew until 11 pm. Their convenient location means that patrons
are spared from having to run for the last train. Just take Shimbashi station's
west exit and walk past the fountain towards the cluster of buildings directly
across the street. You'll see the sign for the Irish House on the second
floor.
