Kinswomyn

Ever stop to think about what the O.L. in your office may be doing at night? Well, it's high time we check out what's going on in the lesbian community.

For the most part, Shinjuku's ni-chome may look like a playground exclusively for sexy, young gay men, but if you brush up your katakana and can read some of the neon signs, you may just stumble into a sexy new world that you have only read about. Even ni-chome has its lesbian bars, drag showrooms, host clubs and a large range of specialized clubs for all tastes (and sizes!).

You may have already heard about Kinswomyn. This lesbian club took its name from the well-known Kinsmen Bar about five years ago and has quickly become a popular spot for lesbian women enjoying a night out in Tokyo. Even K.D. Lang stopped in a couple of years ago and autographed a poster depicting the star in a compromising pose with model Cindy Crawford. This poster now hangs proudly at the club's entrance.

Kinswomyn attracts a young to middle-age crowd and is no secret to divorced Japanese women and the occasional Obasan. Bar master, Tara set out to provide the lesbian community a club of their own and she has done just that. Here, women can relax with a hot rum (Yen 700) or dance to house music and a long island iced tea (Yen 1,500). No men allowed. Tara says, "Many single women come to Kinswomyn seeking good conversation and a new friend." It's not unusual for two ladies to share a drink in the bar and a date later on. (Hey . . . Tara herself is single and looking.) English is not a problem at Kinswomyn and foreign women are very welcome.

Tara has asked me to spread the word about The 10th Women's Weekend to be held in Yoyogi on March 5-7, 1999. Women will gather on that weekend to discuss sexuality, bisexuality and lesbian issues, marriage, children, relations with gay men, HIV, and domestic violence. Either contact Tara or call 5389-1456 for more information.

Every first Thursday night, nearby Club Zinc (3352-6297) holds an event for women only, called "Bar Monalisa." Ladies are also advised to check out Shibuya's The Candle Light Club (3496-0055) for its ladies-only event, "Gold Finger." Ask Tara about upcoming events she has planned for this winter.

Open every night, except Tuesdays, from 8pm to 4am.
