With 174 gay and lesbian bars packed into Shinjuku's Ni-chome, a night
out on the town can become quite the party. Don't forget there are also
gay bookshops, cafes, discos, karaoke houses, saunas, ramen shops, love
hotels and even a small cruising ground. It doesn't take long to realize
that to enjoy all gay Tokyo has to offer will require a great deal of time,
money and a sense of adventure to try new places. Have you checked out The
Lamp Post yet?
If you are seeking a quiet, piano bar of sorts, The Lamp Post may be
just the place for you. Located around the corner from the fruit market
on the main drag, the comfortable atmosphere of The Lamp Post has been a
favorite in the area for nearly twelve years. The Lamp Post attracts a thirtysomething
crowd, both foreign and Japanese. The staff do not speak English, but it
doesn't take a linguist to relax with a warm Grand Marnier, cheese and crackers,
and some slow jazz music.
People quickly get to know one another at The Lamp Post. Several patrons
joined my conversation with bar master, Teruyuki Suzuki in his reminiscing
of a New Year's party a few years ago when, at the strike of midnight, the
water pipes burst giving everyone a shivering start to the new year. No
monthly parties at The Lamp Post, but I hear that a group is planning an
outing once in a while. Everyone is welcome.
Suzuki-san says The Lamp Post is a classic Japanese gay bar with an early
evening "date spot" appeal. Party queens and the prowling tom
cat may be better off down the road at Club Dragon or Arty Farty. Sorry
ladies, you'll need a male escort.
174 queer bars, indeed! Don't believe me? Have a count for yourself,
but start at The Lamp Post.
