Shibuyas art scene has been blessed with a new baby by the name of Gallery Pax. Conveniently located a few minutes up the hill from the 109 Building on the Hachiko side of Shibuya station, the new art space is two floors up from popular lounge/bar Sugar High. Owner/curator Ikuzo Fujimura decided on the name PAX after discovering its meaning (Latin for Peace) during his travel adventures through Europe. So, in the way that peace is supposed to work, Gallery Pax will draw different cultures, styles, ethnicities, tastes in short, people from all walks of life and all corners of the globe together.
The concept of the gallery is to feature one new artist every week, with an opening party on Sunday. Already the art hungry have had a chance to admire the works of emerging female illustrator Hal9000Factory (not her true name, of course), a joint exhibition between photographers-cum-computer-manipulators Ed Thompson and Stephan Wilms, and others.
What makes Pax different from other galleries is its well-stocked bar and huge DJ booth. The former makes it easy for visitors to appraise the art over a cup of coffee, while the latter allows multimedia artists to showcase their creations at full blast. Most importantly, the chances are visitors will have ample opportunities to chat with the artists of the week in an open and relaxed atmosphere, making Pax a little like the eye at the center of an artistic hurricane.
Upcoming and established artists are welcome to contact Ikuzo to join the list of future exhibitors.
