Traditional Japanese-style Ukai Toriyama Restaurant is situated in a beautiful valley in the outskirts of Tokyo near Mount Takao, the perfect spot for a delightful Sunday trip out of the urban jungle. The restaurant comprises a number of thatched-roofed country-style cottages in the middle of a unique Japanese-style garden with babbling brooks, small ponds, and moss-covered water wheels. The only traffic around the garden is the discrete waitresses balancing their trays with delicious food and drinks on the way to one of the many cottages scattered around the garden. There is a certain tranquility about this place that will soon get to you and make you forget the crowded Tokyo subways, heavy traffic on the expressways, or whatever image of Tokyo you had stuck in your mind. Well seated in your private cottage overlooking the garden, you can enjoy lunch or dinner served by kimono-clad waitresses.
There is a choice of four menu sets ranging from Yen 4,500 to Yen 8,500. The Yen 4,500 set includes salad, sashimi, charcoal-broiled chicken and vegetables, and a clear soup sure to please the eye as well as the palate. While the food is tasty and beautifully arranged, the main attraction of Ukai Toriyama is the sheer beauty of the restaurant and the tranquil surroundings, which take you back in time to old Japan the way it used to be, or at least the way many of us like to imagine it. You will find nothing quite like this east of Mount Fuji.
The best time to arrive at the restaurant is two hours before sundown, so that you can experience the beautiful garden in daylight and finish with a pleasant stroll in the evening light when lanterns and torches are lit. Yes, Ukai Toriyama is true "Sunday Afternoon Delight."
